Paint Shop Pro - Version 9, X

PSP
Picture Tube Exporting

If you have used, made and exported Picture Tubes in previous versions of Paint Shop Pro, you will definitely be happy with the new additions in PSP9. No more going back to Preferences to set a new location each time you wish for a Picture Tube to be saved to a new folder.

You have your image all cut out, cleaned up and on a transparent one layer graphic. Now we'll export it as a Picture Tube.

Prepared for Picture Tube

Note

PSP has a preset location for exporting Picture Tubes. If you make no adjustments when exporting Picture Tubes they will go into the folder at My Documents/My PSP Files/Picture Tubes. You can check this in PSP by going to File/Preferences/File Locations and scroll down to where you see Picture Tubes. There you will see the location that Picture Tubes will be exported to. In previous versions of PSP, we had to add new folders in this panel if we wanted to export our Picture Tubes to another folder and then keep going back to this panel each time we wanted to specify a new folder. Now there is a new easier way to specify where you wish to export a Picture Tube!

Step 1.   Export a Picture Tube.

Go to File/Export/Picture Tube and the panel shown to the right will appear.

If you are exporting only a 1 cell picture tube (one picture in the tube) you will not need to make any adjustments in the Cell Arangement settings. If you have more than one cell, you will specify how many cells across and down you need and the width and height will be calculated for you. It is a good idea to allow the Placement options to default. These settings can always be changed in the Tool Options as you use the Picture Tubes.

Export Picture Tube Window

Step 2.   Specify File Location.   New to PSP 9!

Click on the little icon that looks like a stack of folders just above the OK button.  File Location Button  The panel below will appear. (Your panel will appear larger than the example.)

Note:...  For a detailed explanation of all areas and buttons of the Export panel, click on this link: File Locations Panel. (Not active yet)

File Locations Panel

A.   Scroll in the File types: list until you see Picture Tubes and highlight it if it is not already highlighted.

B.   PSP will automatically highlight the Picture Tubes folder that has been placed in My Documents/My PSP Files/Picture Tubes. The other file that you see in the Picture Tube file folders section is the Picture Tubes folder that is contained within the PSP Program and will contain the Picture tubes that have been provided with Paint Shop Pro.

C.   Click on the Create Sub Folder button and a small panel will appear allowing you to add a sub-folder. The new Sub Folder you create will be in the My Documents/My PSP Files/Picture Tubes folder because this is the one that was highlighted in the previous "File Locations" panel.

Fill in a name that you wish your new subfolder to be. This is a good way to categorize and organize your Picture Tubes. For instance, you can have a sub-folder named "animals" (as in the example), flowers, birds, cartoons, etc. As you will see, with PSP 9 you now have the option of viewing individual sub-folders so there is no need to browse through every single Picture Tube to find the one you wish to use. When you have named your new Sub Folder, click OK and you will be taken back to the File Locations Panel.

Name new Sub folder

D.   Scroll in the Save to: area using the down arrow (marked D in the example.) until you find the name of the new folder you have just created. Highlight your new folder and you will see it appear in the Save to: box.

Save to Folder

Note: You can have as many Sub Folders as you would like to keep your Picture Tubes organized into categories. The example above is only a small example of the number of Sub Folders that I have.

Once your new folder is shown in the Save to: box, click OK and you will be taken back to the original Export Picture Tube panel.

All that is remaining for you do do is fill in the name that you want for your Picture Tube. I always use the underscore between words when saving any file but for Picture Tubes you do not have to do this. As you fill in the name you will see PSP creating the .psptube of the same name just below the area you are typing in.

When you have named your Picture Tube, click OK and your new Picture tube is ready for use.

Name Picture Tube

Picture Tube Tool  Now when you want to use a Picture Tube, click on the Picture Tube Tool and at the top of your list of Picture Tubes, you can scroll to any folder you wish rather to see the Tubes in that particular folder. Highlight the sub-folder category that you want and it will appear in the vox next to Category and you will only view Picture Tubes in that folder.

You can view all Picture Tubes in all folders if you wish simply by scrolling to All in the drop-down list.
