Paint Shop Pro - Version 8, 9, X+

Crescent Moon Shamrocks

Crescent Shamrocks

This tutorial is written in Version 9 but will work well in Versions 8 and X+. You will need only a basic knowledge of PSP, including the Layers, names of tools and where to find them. All other instructions are written in detail.

Supplies needed for this tutorial:

  1. Paint Shop Pro, Version 8 and up
(Instructions are given for Version 9 but should work in all versions.)
  2. My .pspimage shamrock - Download Shamrock Here - or use one of your own.
  3. Crescent Moon Filter - Free - Click here to Download
  4. Font of your choice
  5. (Optional) Eye Candy 3.1 or 4000. If you don't have either of these you can use the bevel effect in PSP.

Let's Begin

First Shamrock

New Raster Layer
  1. Open a new image: 400 x 400, 16 million colors, Transparent Background.

  1. Open the shamrock provided with the tut. Make sure you have the layer holding the shamrock selected and copy (Ctrl C) and Paste as a New Layer (Ctrl L) on the blank image you opened.

  1. Name the layer you just placed the shamrock on "Cut Glass".

  1. Activate your Magic Wand and use the settings below in the tool bar.

Hold the Shift key and click on the light green areas of the shamrock including the stem.

  1. Keep the selections active and go to Effects/Plugins/Crescent Moon/Cut Glass. Use the following settings:

  1. Keep selections active
We'll be doing the bevel now and I'm including settings I used for EC 3.1 Inner Bevel, EC4000 Bevel Boss and PSP Bevel. Feel free to try your own bevel settings.

Settings for PSP Inner Bevel and result: Note: I found that my PSP bevel came out a little jaggy. You might find better settings.:)

  1. Deselect.

Second Shamrock

**Hint: The instructions makes a sig like the one at the top of the page but if you wish you can make the shamrocks on separate images and export as tubes or whatever you'd like :) **.

This shamrock will be easier because we'll use the same procedures as for the first one

  1. Get your original Shamrock. Copy it and paste as a new layer on top of the one we finished. Rename this layer "Crescent Quilt".

  1. Select the light green areas again and go to the Crescent Moon filter but this time select "Quilt". Use the settings in the screen shot below.

  1. Apply the same inner bevel that you used before and Deselect.
  1. Activate your Deform Tool and use it to twist and resize this 2nd Shamrock until you have it where you want it.

Third Shamrock

The third shamrock is done just like the others.

  1. Once more go back and copy the original shamrock and paste it into a new layer on top of the other two. Rename the new layer "Warm Cloth".

  1. Select the light areas like before and this time use the "Warm Cloth" setting of the Crescent Moon Filter. The settings are shown below.

  1. Apply your inner bevel.

  1. Use the deform tool on the third shamrock as before to place and/or resize it as you'd like.

3rd Shamrock finished

Complete Sig

  1. Finish your sig however you would like. For the one in this tut I added my name and a border and then applied the Crescent Moon cut glass to both.
happy St. Patrick's Day
